John August blogs about the art of screenwriting and other things concerning filmmaking. He had his directorial debut with The Nines which premiered at Sundance last year. He currently lives in Los Angeles. He does not post at a certain time but he does post frequently, usually every 2 to 3 days.
Every since he started the Q and A sessions at IMDB.com he’s become very popular as a go-to guy for screenwriting and film industry knowledge. Because some questions would get repeated, he started posting his answers on his website.
Recently, he’s been getting a lot of attention on his comments about illegal downloading, links here and here.
This has lead to a jump in popularity, especially with bookmarking websites like Digg.com where his blog was Dugged here, but before that, he was dugged for sharing what he learned from World of Warcraft here.
This blog relates to my mine because a chunk of it has to deal with questions concerning the film industry and budding filmmakers hungry for knowledge on how to be successful and break in. Some of his blog topics are Starting Out in Hollywood, How do you become successful?, and Which agent should I choose?
His blog is very professional yet personal. Professional because his posts are short and sweet and to the point; Personal because he ads his own personality into every post no matter the topic. The posts are never overwhelmed with details and so he posts are never too long or too short, just right. If there’s a topic that needs to be discussed in length, what he does is split the posts into parts.
The audience is made up of a variety of members. There are the budding filmmakers, budding screenwriters, producers, other filmmakers, or just fans of his work, but most of his audience is made up of people starting out or having an interest in a film career.
This blog is a good template on how to build a successful blog with short/tight posts, relevant content, and an audience base that gives feedback and or reacts to posts.
John August is able to hand down knowledge from within industry to his readers, but because I’m not in the film industry yet, this is a blog attempting to gather knowledge from established and aspiring filmmakers for other aspiring and beginning filmmakers. Also, this blog will focus more on not just screenwriting but the aspect of filmmaking as a whole.
